WHY DON’T THEY HAVE THESE FOR GROWN-UPS? You guys don’t even realize how much I miss playing on playgrounds and jungle gyms and running up and down and through these mazes and rope stuff and slides and monkey bars and DANG. I just want to run around screaming and playing sometimes, is all.

My niece goes on an adventure.
For quite a while now, I’ve been sitting on some original fiction. Stories I want to write. Imaginary worlds I want to build.
The main story that took shape in my head was about this Robin Hood type thief character living in a sort of mythical version of the ancient city of Palmyra (except with, like, a cursed forest instead of a desert). She’s like estranged from her mother, and she’s trying to find her brothers & sisters again.
Archaeologically, the real world Palmyra was a city that profited off the military protection of trade caravans between the west and the east. But more than that, it’s a fascinating picture of how some desert tribes forged a new identity at the border of two clashing empires. It is an example (among many examples) of how people negotiated their own identities under the shadow of imperialism.
Unfortunately, I can’t seem to bring myself to write things when it’s just for me.
That’s where my niece comes in.
Although we lived together for a couple of years, she now lives overseas (her family works for the UN, helping refugees). You may remember her as the niece I described on LJ (I showed Avatar to her and posted her reactions).
She’s 8 now, and to “work on her typing skills,” I decided to start an ongoing choose-your-own-adventure with her. I guess it’s really more of an RPG. The point is: suddenly I have amazing motivation to write! We’ve been able to go back and forth nearly once a day, and I’d like to share with you our adventures. A few things you should know before we get started.
- I decided not to set it in my fictional version of Palmyra, and I decided not to make her into my thief character. But, even if we never go there, I decided to set the story in that universe (probably with more magic, though). My niece’s character lives on the edge of the same empire, but in a more remote area away from the primary trade routes.
- My primary intent is for us to have fun together. Don’t expect amazing literature or anything. I see myself as sort of the wardrobe door into Narnia. I’m the gateway for her to explore a sort of fantasy universe.
- It will probably be pretty hackneyed and cliche in many ways. But she’s 8. These tropes are new to her, and I just want to have fun with her.
- I certainly have some big picture plot things in mind, but the key is to let the story evolve around the direction she wants to take it.
- I guess the fact that it’s sort of a text RPG will make it superficially resemble that one webcomic popular on my dash. ;) Except with like a real 8 year old girl playing it. We’ll see how this goes.
Comments and Questions are highly welcomed/appreciated throughout the process!

I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT PATTY!!!
“I want to talk to you about Patty!” is a legit phrase I have incorporated into my everyday life.

The Secret Adventures of Toph’s Daughter. Aka “Weird Dreams, Man. Weird Dreams.”
Last night I dreamt that we had all forgotten about a show that had been made in between ATLA and Legend of Korra.
Rawles and Memlu (uh, I KNOW THAT IS REALLY WEIRD, but if it’s any consolation, I think the last time was when Avatar was still on the air) apparated in mid air, manifesting as giant creatures with super long robot spider-legs. Rawles was a pike (fish), and Memlu was a crocodile. They announced they had changed their names to “Lunkerhead and Dooby,” sternly insisting that I call them that from then on. “Or else,” their eyes glowing red. Then they said they would show us (whoever “us” was, as I can’t remember who else was there) the lost footage that had been erased from our minds.
So I fell through a wormhole into the Avatar universe. And it was about like the Gaang 2.0 (and also Mai & Zuko who were just making out in the background, and that’s literally the only thing they did the entire time). The big focus was on Toph’s long lost daughter, named Lugnut. I don’t even know, man. She looked like a giant block in Toph’s clothes, sort of lego-ish or maybe minecraft-ish. She had a tiny badger-mole pet that acted like a tick, and we were all distressed because it was missing and apparently sucking someone’s blood. And that was bad. Suddenly some black lines started to sprout from the ground, showing the reconstruction of Toph’s family tree. As it continued to manifest, Ron Swanson explained in a very serious voice that I wasn’t allowed to see who the other siblings were or who the father was and that Mike & Bryan were going to keep that as a secret for later. Then we ran into a bunch of Mario blocks floating over the landscape, and an army of goombas emerged from the bushes. Lugnut explained that she would defeat them with dancing. The world started to melt away (literally, like ooze) into a sea of colors and dancing neon lights. Then I woke up.
I’m not even sure what to tag this post.
So… tl;dr you can all unfollow me now.

You know, the whole courage wolf/awkward penguin/whatever style meme is out of control, but I can’t complain about this one.
